How overnight blocks work
A block runs 8 to 12 hours, typically evening through morning, with the nurse awake and monitoring rather than sleeping on site. She handles medications, repositioning, toileting, vitals, and anything that comes up overnight, then hands off with a written summary of how the night went.

For high-acuity situations, a retainer keeps a Registered Nurse reachable around the clock rather than only during scheduled visits. Families use it during a hard stretch of a chronic or terminal illness, or immediately after a complex discharge, and scale it back as things stabilize.
Why one nurse instead of a rotation
Continuity is the point. The same Registered Nurse already knows the medications, the history, and the preferences, so nothing gets re-explained at 2 a.m. and nothing falls through a shift change. It is safer clinically and far less exhausting for the family to manage.
